By its nature, regional football often throws up the prospect of matches between two local rivals. With both clubs moving to the UhlSport Hellenic League in the close season, this weekend’s game at Kingys, between Droitwich Spa and Bewdley Town, represents possibly the shortest distance either club will travel in this competition.
The two clubs travelled markedly different paths to reach this fixture. The 2023 -2024 season proved a difficult one for the Riversiders, picking up just one win and one draw during their league campaign, resulting with relegation to step 6. The Saltmen had a better time of it, only missing out on promotion to step 5 by the narrowest of margins.
Both clubs have made a positive start to life in the Hellenic League. Spa currently have a 100% record, amassing an impressive +24 goal difference in the process. Following a surprise home defeat to Shortwood United on Monday, Bewdley sit in second place, six points behind Spa, with 4 wins to their credit so far. The Riversiders have 4 players in the top 15 division goalscoring stats while Spa players occupy 3 of the top 4 spots.
I’m really looking forward to this one. So, with the weather set fair for Saturday, why not get down to Kingys and enjoy a pint in the late summer sun while watching what must be the biggest game in the division so far this season?
Cheers
Steve
